Webragged stepped fracture; this suggests that the stone may be the top of a much taller slab, perhaps of similar proportions to that of the Papil cross-slab from Burra Isle, Shetland (Alien & Anderson 1903, 15). The sides of the slab follow clean natural fissure lines, splaying slightly towards the base of the stone. WebThere are over 200 symbol stones known from eastern and northern Scotland (RCAHMS 2008) — approximately two-thirds are incised symbol-stones, and the remaining third are Christian cross-slabs. The cross slabs are mostly in the north-east of the country and concentrated in 'Southern Pictland'.
