WebOptic nerve hypoplasia or atrophy is a developmental defect of the optic nerve fibers of one or both eyes (bilateral). If bilateral and severe, it leads to complete blindness. Neurological defects such as quadriplegia and hemiplegia are often associated. It can be related to maternal diabetes and to fetal alcohol syndrome.
